About 14 miles west of Horseman's Ranch off 82 Highway and I-35, Gainesville has several  major retail stores (Home Depot, Wal-Mart) and restaurants located there. Gainesville is the county seat of Cooke County and has a population of around 30,000 people, making it the largest city in the area.  The recently restored historic downtown area features the county courthouse and a wonderful variety of art, antique and specialty shops and unique local restaurants. There is a community college, zoo, and the very active Morton museum in town. Just north of Gainesville off of I-35 is Winstar World Casino, the 3rd largest in the U.S. Quality entertainment is scheduled regularly in their 2500 seat Global Event Center.

About 12 miles east of HR on 82 Highway, Whitesboro is known as the Equine Vet Specialist Capital of Texas due to its strong population of Equine Health practitioners. Surrounded by breeding and performance horse ranches, Whitesboro Equine Vet clinics cater to the needs of reproduction, performance and general health. Surgery is available on site in many facilities. There are specialists for just about anything equine related within about 25 miles. The community is also quite active, hosting the annual Peanut Festival each fall. The population explodes for this popular event, as well as for the July 4th rodeo. No big box stores here, but plenty of specialty, including Denards and the Longhorn Ranch General Store.

Sherman/Denison – About 28 miles from HR, Sherman has a rich and diverse history that includes a colorful tapestry of individuals and institutions. Monikers have included Helldorado on the Cross Timbers in the 1850's, when the area was a bit on the wild side, to The Athens of Texas, at the turn of the century due to the numerous upper level educational facilities and the cultural offerings such as the Sherman Opera House.

Today Sherman has a thriving art, theater and business environment. The county seat for Grayson County, they have a lovely Courthouse on the square. They have festivals, art shows, live theater performances and historic events year round.   On the outskirts of the historic downtown, you’ll find Lowe’s, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, Gander Mountain, Petco, and all the usual big box stores.

Closely tied to Sherman is Denison, TX. The birthplace of Dwight Eisenhower, Denison has a very charming downtown, Loy Lake Park and historic village, great restaurants and an active community.

If this doesn’t soothe your shopping or dining craving, head down to Denton, Dallas or Fort Worth.  All are an easy drive from Horseman's Ranch.
